For the past few months Karyn and I have have been working hard to organize a second year of nesting surveys in Ada Foah.  The important work we started last year is going to continue this year with the help of two students from the University of Ghana and a volunteer from the United States.  HATCH would like to welcome Andrew Agyekumhene and George Baffour.  Andrew and George are master's students at the University of Ghana and will be conducting their thesis work around the nesting ecology and hatching success of sea turtles in Ada Foah.  As of October 2007, they have already started conducting surveys and have documented nesting olive ridleys.  The leatherbacks will most likely start nesting soon, but as of today (Nov 11) Andrew and George have not seen them.  Megan McSherry is arriving on November 19 and will spend the nesting season (through mid February) at the field station.  She will assist Andrew and George with nesting surveys and tagging.  She will also assist the Ghana Wildlife Division's efforts to educate the communities and schools about wildlife management and conservation.  Keep an eye on the webpage because we are also going to ask Megan to send bi-monthly updates to post on the webpage.

Since Spring 2007, HATCH has been busy doing a number of things:  We helped the University of Ghana at Legon negotiate a 10 year lease of the research station from the Ghana Forestry Division.  I am happy to say the field station is now in the hands of the University of Ghana for at least the next 10 years.  With AK Armah (Dept of Oceanography and Fisheries, University of Ghana), Andrew and George, we have submitted four mansucripts for presentation at the upcoming International Sea Turtle Society meeting behing held January 2008 in Baja California.

We recently purchased a domain (www.hlami.org) and are working hard at developing a proper website to promote not only sea turtle conservation in Ghana but to also promote ecotourism opportunities in Ghana.  We will keep you notified as we move into this new website.  Karyn is working hard to get the proper paperwork in place to declare HATCH as a non-profit in the state of Florida.

Perhaps our biggest improvement for this upcoming season will be in our collaboration with Ghana Wildlife Division to improve the education programs conducted in the schools and communities.  When I return to Ghana (Nov 16) I am brining a new projector, 2 new DVD players, and a large stack of movies, documentaries, and nature shows on DVD.  Soon after leaving in the spring, the old projector used by Ghana Wildlife Division stopped working.  The only video tapes they had would not play very clear due to the amount of fungus (as happens in tropical, humid conditions) growing on the tapes.  This year we will donate to the Ghana Wildlife Department all new equipment to support their education programs.  We could not have done this without the help of many of you.  Karena Fulton donated a new DVD player and multiple movies and documentaries.  I also received great sea turtle documentaries from Nova Scotia Leatherback Turtle Working Group, Turtle Island Restoration Network, and Hatchling Productions/Belldi Consultancy.  These videos will be very helpful in promoting sea turtle conservation in Ghana.

The profit made from the t-shirts we are now selling will go directly to support the education component to our sea turtle conservation efforts in Ghana.  We need to raise this money to pay for fuel that will run the generator used to operate the projector and DVD player.  To order shirts, please email (ghanaturtles@animail.net) me your order so that I can confirm, and hold, your requested sizes before sending payment.
